Description
“Summer Walk to Heybridge Basin”
This open edition – signed and numbered – small collectors print of an original painting capturing a typical sunny afternoon at one of Maldon’s most loved spots. The canal path is busy with walkers heading toward the estuary, drawn by the promise of a cream tea at Tiptree Jams, The Lock Tea Room, or a relaxed drink and meal at one of the two pubs, The Jolly Sailor or The Old Ship. The scene centres on the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation, which runs from Springfield Basin in Chelmsford to the sea lock just beyond Heybridge Basin. Along its route, the navigation passes through six bridges and drops 75 feet through twelve locks, with flood gates at Beeleigh protecting the cut from the River Blackwater. The waterway meanders gently west to east through open countryside before reaching the estuary at Maldon. In the centre of the image, the Heybridge Basin Pleasure Boats hut marks a focal point of activity, where rowing boats can be hired or a sunset cruise enjoyed on warm summer evenings. The painting reflects the relaxed pace, soft light, and everyday pleasures that make this stretch of water so distinctive. This print forms part of my wider catalogue of original paintings depicting Maldon and its surrounding landscape.

Why this piece resonates
“Summer Walk to Heybridge Basin” resonates because it captures a moment that feels familiar to many people who know this place. A warm afternoon, an unhurried walk along the canal, and the quiet anticipation of reaching the estuary all come together in a scene that is both everyday and special. The painting reflects the pleasure of moving through a landscape at walking pace, noticing light on the water, gentle activity around the basin, and the sense of ease that comes with time spent outdoors.
For those who have walked this path, visited the tea rooms, or watched the boats come and go, the scene often stirs memories of shared afternoons, conversations, and simple pleasures.
